Artists have been exploring ways to communicate through language and symbols since prehistoric cave art. Think of the myriad of devices we use to communicate – numbers and symbols, various language alphabets, calligraphy and typography, music, graffiti, codes – the list goes on and on.

In this workshop, we will explore mark making styles and techniques as they relate to the creation of language or the suggestion of symbols, text, words, and phrases. We will work primarily with painting and drawing tools, and participants are welcome to explore how these concepts can translate into their own artistic voice and studio practice as fiber artists. Communication is essential to our own visual storytelling; mark, line, and text can offer the artist another way to deepen the message of his/her work.

Participants will receive a supply list prior to the workshop and are responsible for bringing all their own equipment and supplies.
