All MoFA members attending the Retreat are encouraged to bring items for the MoFA Silent Auction with proceeds going to our MoFA Scholarship Fund. Items can be left at the registration table. We will also have a space for Members Sales. Members are to have all items labeled and will be responsible for selling their merchandise.

Workshop 1: Tea Bag Books

Instructor: Debra Lewis
Used teabags will be dyed with alcohol inks by the dripping method. The papers will then be made into a book with a cloth cover we will make.
Provided: Kit – 15 teabags, 2 pieces of fabric and 1 piece batting, spine, needle, a picture of stitching, alcohol Inks, embroidery floss and some embellishments, gloves if desired
Students will need to bring scissors.
Supply Fee: $15.00

Workshop 2: Stash-Busting Fabric Beads

Instructor: Carlene
Wondering what to do with all those bits and pieces of fabrics, beads, ribbons etc? This three-hour workshop will show you ways to turn them into fabric beads to use as embellishment for art quilts, mixed media pieces, books or jewelry.
Supply List for Students to bring: A couple of skeins of embroidery floss, needles, and scissors
Supply fee: 0

Workshop 3: Chicken Scratch Embroidery

Instructor: Rhonda Schrum
Chicken Scratch Embroidery, also called Depression Lace, Hoover Lace, Snowflake Embroidery is an old technique used by women who could not afford lace to adorn their clothing. Learn the basic stitches and create samples of how they can be varied. Then plan and begin a pillow cover. You can continue to work on your pillow during your Retreat free time or finish at home. You will have a handout to take with you.
Supply list for students to bring: Scissors, washable embroidery marker, one or two colorful skeins of embroidery floss, pencil with eraser, embroidery hoops 5” and a larger one (8+”)

Saturday All Day Workshop

9-12 am 1-5 pm

Workshop 4: Upcycling Garment
Leandra Spangler and Robin Wingo
Did you know 85% of garments end up in a landfill? Spend a day exploring how to upcycle garments that come from your closet, the thrift store, or other sources. In the morning we will talk about how to design, select materials, stitch, and finish an upcycled shirt. Examples of various upcycled garments will be available to look at and talk about. In the afternoon, we will help you to use the garments you bring to design, fit, and stitch an upcycled shirt.
Supply list for Students to bring: 1 shirt that fits comfortably through the shoulder, 2-3 additional shirts that compliment or provide contrast to the first shirt, in prints or solids. Large or extra-large shirts, men’s or women’s, yield the most usable fabric, sewing machine, sewing tools – scissors, seam ripper and or small scissors to deconstruct garments, tape measure, hem gauge, pins, etc., buttons, trims, threads for hand and or machine stitching.

Workshop 5: The Mad Hatters

Let’s make a recycled hat like no other you have ever had. We will use brown paper bags, found objects, paint, markers, fiber materials, and imagination to produce a hat for the MoFA Trashion Style Show.
Supply list for students to bring: Scissors, any found objects that you might want to use for a themed hat.

Workshop 6 Fiber Beads
Jackie Krokson
We will make an assortment of fabric beads using strips of fabric, silk, cotton, yarn, beads, sequins, buttons, etc. Also a self-stuffed bead from wool and denim rolled beads..and maybe some others.
Supply list for Students to bring: Basic sewing supplies thread needles scissors, scraps of cotton or silk fabric 1″x6″ or so, knitting needles to wrap or .embellishments. I will have lots of materials also.

Saturday Afternoon Workshops


Workshop 7: Weaving on the Go
This workshop will be using a “Hatton Loom”. The weaving will incorporate yarn ends and other recycled materials. The project can be continued at your leisure after the class and the loom can be re-used.
Supply list for Students to bring: scissors, yarn scraps (if you have some special ones) Class will provide “Hatton Loom”, yarn and found items for weaving.

Workshop 8: Mojo Doll: a charm, a power object, or “just plain fun”
Pat Owoc
A simple doll and a doll stand will be provided to participants. The rest is up to you embroidery, stitchery, beading, embellishing — you decide what to add to your own mojo doll. No specific skill necessary, just a willingness to let loose and stitch!
Supply list for Students to bring: scissors, thimble if you use one, pins. Bring embroidery floss, beads and small trinkets that you already own and would enjoy using on a small project. Beading needles will be provided if you want to use small beads.—I will also have some beads and trinkets and embroidery floss and yarns and trims that can be used by class members.
